Define a Bill of Materials for a new product

Build the recipe Techondo will consume automatically on every future production run.

Before you start

  • The finished product already added in Inventory › Products
  • Every raw material or component it's made from, also added as products

Steps

  1. List the components

For the finished product, open its BOM and add each raw material or sub-assembly it requires, with the quantity one unit of output consumes.

  2. Nest sub-assemblies if you make them

If a component is itself something you produce — a sub-assembly with its own recipe — give it a BOM too. Techondo explodes the whole tree when it costs the top-level product, so you don't cost sub-assemblies by hand.

  3. Account for expected waste

If a process typically loses a percentage to scrap, set that on the BOM. Actual scrap is still logged per run, but this gives you a realistic yield estimate before you've made anything.

  4. Cost a hypothetical run

Before committing real materials, use the BOM to see what a batch would cost at current material prices. If it doesn't match your intuition, a quantity in the recipe is usually the reason.

What you end up with

A recipe that Techondo can consume automatically on every future run, instead of a spreadsheet someone has to remember to update.
